Having been part of the house music scene since its emergence in Australia, John Course first came to prominence by winning the Victorian leg of the DMC turntablist competition, a feat he repeated two years in a row.  Moving from turntablist roots, he embraced house music from the time it emerged and was listed in ‘DJ Magazine’s’ first ever ‘Top 100 DJ’s’ list in 1993.

He has gone on to co-found Vicious Recordings, produce original music, mix over a million CD’s for ‘Ministry of Sound,’ ‘OneLove’ & ‘Vicious.’ John has DJ’d in every corner of the country, had a national dance music radio show in Australia for over 7 years, co-founded private event booking agency ‘Request Artists’ and most recently, hosts his own webcast during the Covid-19 isolation period.  An incredibly popular weekly 3-4 hour LIVE DJ Set, which has been keenly followed by clubbers past, present & future, for the last 25 weeks! It’s the go-to Saturday night ‘Together at Home’ Clubbing experience.

What is unique about the place you live, or is it famous for something?

My home town of Melbourne is famous for its sport, its foodie culture and it’s music culture. All of this has been affected by Covid, but I am 100% sure it will return to it’s pre-virus era as these scenes are so vibrant in Melbourne. The immigration of many European people after WW2 really kicked off café culture, with Italian and Greek populations bringing their love of food. Add Asian immigration to that mix through the 70’s and 80’s and you have a complete melting pot of food…YUM. Likewise music culture has always been a part of my city… From the early 70’s we had late night club licenses, so venues could open until 7am, sometimes even 24 hours (which current venues such as the iconic dance music hub of Revolver still trades under). Melbourne was also home to Australia’s biggest independent music distributors and Mushroom Music started and is still in Melbourne, a leading label in the development of the Australian band scene through the 70’s and 80’s. Sport…wow where do I start… How about the Australian GP, the Melbourne Cup, The Australian Open Tennis and the AFL… all epic and the tip of the sporting iceberg as far as Melbourne offerings go!

Through lockdown, what has been your favourite thing to do at the weekend?

Get out for walks when possible and of course, my Saturday night live webcast which goes live on my DJ John Course Facebook, Twitch TV channel and Youtube Channel… from 7pm every Saturday night for about 3 and a half hours where I dig through past classics and stacks of new stuff… Always encouraging watchers to forget about the week’s troubles for a few hours, dance around their lounge room and just enjoy a night in. 26 weeks in a row and still going strong!

Any side hustles or skills you want to share with us?

Just working on music myself, working on the label Vicious Recordings and working on Request Artists (a private function DJ booking agency which has again been greatly impacted by the Covid issues). I have learnt a fair bit about online broadcasting things too!

What cheeky banger has been playing through your speakers on repeat for the last 6 months?

“Let It Go” Louie Vega and The Martinez Brothers (out in late 2019 and strong all through this year) and “Secrets” by The Journey (something coming out through a Melbourne label that I’ve been lucky enough to have a preview of).

Favourite Friday night dinner at home or restaurant?

The offerings from Rebel Blue, simple home style Greek  dishes, are amazing!  (Rebel Blue is a restaurant on Chapel St in the buzzing suburb of Windsor, which is currently doing take away only during Covid)

Tell us about your current projects and what you’ve been working on?

I’ve managed to get some more studio time than normal so apart from finishing my current release “Just a Little” (a house music styled cover of the Liberty X R&B hit), I also have another collaboration with the mighty Sgt Slick called “Love Is” which will be out later in the year. Also working on a couple of new music ventures… More to come on those soon…

‘Just a Little’ pre-release contest with Apple Music – Win a Coursey DJ set broadcast live from your house (post Covid-19 restrictions).
